One + One = Three

Deciding what to paint is sometimes as tricky a task as actually creating the artwork. I like to select things that produce a feeling within me, usually of hope, a bit of magic, or just a sense that what's there is more than the sum of its parts.

It's with that idea that I named my latest collection One + One = Three. The idea that you can combine elements together that create something greater than themselves individually. Say for example, you have palm trees and a wall; on their own, they are fairly plain, but all of a sudden, with a bit of lighting, there's a new feeling there that didn't exist before.

I went down a rabbit hole (as did Alice) when exploring ideas in and around this concept. I remembered how much I love risograph printing (where you can create a third colour by overlaying two semi-transparent colours).

A similar effect is achieved with Tombow felt tip pens, and equally, when I thought more about it, when you mix two paint colours together you get a third. This third colour can't be undone back to its original components, which makes it an emergent phenomenon. Almost like a cake being the combination of ingredients, and a home being a unique combination of items.
